So what if Hilary Duff hasn't got flat abs

Cathy Winston thinks Hilary Duff might be her new heroine for being, shock horror, a normal woman with curves after giving birth.

Shock! Horror! Woman fails to completely lose baby weight within three months of giving birth... I think Hilary Duff might be my new heroine for standing up and pointing out that instantly snapping back into some kind of taut, toned, pre-pregnancy body isn’t achievable, let alone the most important thing she’s got to think about.

After critics called her post-baby bikini body ‘gross’– yes, she dared to wear a bikini without being a size zero – the actress told InTouch magazine, 'I'm not perfect, but I feel fantastic. This is how it goes for most women, the weight doesn't fall off overnight. I'm not back to where I want to be, but I'm not stressing it.'

Good for her. Most normal women - and celebs, however likeable and down-to-earth, rarely count as normal with their personal trainers, private chefs and army of helpers – take one year, one month and two weeks to get their figure (and sex drive) back after having a baby, according to a new survey from Mojomums.

It takes nine months to grow a new human, so it’s not going to take five minutes or even five weeks to recover

And when you consider all the changes that happen during pregnancy, it’s hardly surprising. Without going into all the graphic details (the body is a miraculous thing, but you might be reading this over lunch) it takes nine months to grow a new human, so it’s not going to take five minutes or even five weeks to recover. Unless you’re Heidi Klum.

Besides, who thinks that exercise and diet is going to be top of a new mum’s agenda? Would all the mean-spirited commenters sneering at Hilary’s abs prefer it if she left her three-month-old son Luca at home and spent all day in the gym?

You’re not even supposed to start working out for at least six weeks after birth, and impressively the actress has already been doing a few spin classes plus occasional training sessions, while most women are mainlining biscuits to compensate for another night’s broken sleep.

Why should you have to justify still having a muffin top when even getting dressed counts as an achievement some days

It seems there really is no time when our bodies aren’t fair game any more. Once pregnancy was off-limits from the pressure, but I know from experience that’s no longer the case, with all and sundry commenting on bump size as if most of us have got any control over it.

And then, when you’re coming to terms with your life having changed in the most dramatic way, why should you have to justify still having a muffin top when even getting dressed counts as an achievement some days?

So for every teeny-tiny celeb who’s wearing bodycon as she leaves the hospital, we need at least one Hilary Duff to remind us that it’s the superskinnies who aren’t normal.
