The best gifts for Valentine's
1. Warm your heart
Cold hands equal a warm heart, so the saying goes. But now scientists at Yale University have dispelled this myth after a study showed that people who were physically warm ended up being nicer to others. This is all fine by us as we'd definitely prefer a warm heart and warm hands. Luckily we discovered the Love Heart pocket warmer, a handy heated gel pad that fits inside your pocket and stays warm for 40 minutes. The warmth is activated by flexing a metal disc inside the gel and a chemical reaction causes it to heat up in seconds. The cute heart shape makes it the perfect Valentine's treat, plus your other half will have no excuse for trying to warm their hands up on you!

2. Bottle it
Baby, it's cold outside and what better excuse to stay in on a freezing February night than to snuggle up with your Valentine? If the central heating is not quite cutting it, go old school with a retro hot-water bottle. The humble hot- water bottle will not only heat things up in bed - natch - but heading to the British Heart Foundation gift shop will make you extra big hearted because 100% of the proceeds go to the charity. If that doesn't warm your heart I don't know what will.

3. Full of beans
We are now a nation of coffee drinkers with almost three- quarters (72%) of us regularly drinking the stuff. If your other half is one of them, treat them to breakfast in bed with this red-hot cafetiere. The Rainbow range from La Cafetière, RRP £13, has eight gorgeous colours to choose from, but this romantic red is our choice for Valentine's Day. The classy coffee pot holds the perfect amount for two people so you can recreate the romance of an Italian coffee shop without leaving the house! Our tip: add a few biccies for extra brownie points.

4. Hearty meal
Restaurants on Valentine's Day are bursting at the seams with loved-up couples holding hands and whispering sweet nothings. Avoid the PDAs and stay in with a home-cooked meal. They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach and nothing will warm the cockles of the heart more than a home-cooked casserole. They don't come more hearty than in this gorgeous heart-shaped oven dish from Le Creuset, RRP £40. Best of all, the whole thing is dishwasher friendly, so you don't even have to argue about who does the washing up!

5. Step Up
Home is where the heart is, especially with this pretty doormat. There are lots of cute designs to choose from but this colourful hearts mat is our favourite. It's certainly brightened up the front door but it almost seems a pity to wipe our feet on it!

6. Romantic night in
Grab the popcorn, light some candles and plan your own romantic night in with the ultimate girly movie. Universal Pictures is marking its 100th anniversary this year with a new Valentine's collection, making the perfect V-Day gift. The Valentine's Day Editions include 14 popular chick flicks in special loved-up packaging. Choose from last year's hit Bridesmaids, all-time favourite Bridget Jones's Diary or sing-a-long blockbuster Mamma Mia! The Movie. Plus, each DVD sleeve can be personalised with a special message from your beau - how cute? We want to get all 14 and have a massive movie marathon!

7. Raining men?
Unfortunately the weather forecast hasn't predicted it will be raining eligible bachelors this year but still, it's best to be prepared for that other kind of downpour (the type that makes your hair all frizzy and your feet cold) with a kissable Lulu Guiness lips umbrella. The designer has teamed up with umbrella experts Fulton for a special range of her quirky designs. Nigel Fulton, chief executive at Fulton, says: "We're delighted to have worked with Lulu Guinness. The glamorous and stylish umbrellas combine Lulu's iconic prints with Fulton's quality designs." We couldn't agree more, in fact we've even found ourselves wishing for a spot of rain so we can road-test our favourite styles. Well, if we're not going to get a kiss this year, we need to get some lip action from somewhere!More Lulu Guinness umbrellas on Ciao
8. At your fingertips
If you want to have some fun and take a more light-hearted approach to Valentine's Day, how about some quirky nail wraps with a kitsch Love Heart design? Rebel 'I love you' nail wraps, £7.99, are so easy to apply and if you find yourself late for a hot date you don't have to worry about smudges. The self-adhesive strips simply fix straight onto your nail, cutting to the perfect size with nail scissors. People will definitely be impressed at your nail art skills but if the funky love heart motif is too much for the office, there are plenty of other designs to choose from so you can go for something more subtle.

9. Get Cheesy!
We love something a bit unusual, so for those who really want to impress their food-loving partner this February, how about a gorgeous heart-shaped cheese? You may be forgiven for thinking the heart-shape is a cheesy gimmick for Valentine's, but in fact it's the perfect edible treat for any cheese-lover. This Cornish Yarg is a semi-hard cheese from the South West. It is deliciously creamy under the rind, slightly crumbly in the core and beautifully presented in brushed leaves. Not your average supermarket find! The 2.8kg heart-shaped Cornish Yarg is available from selected caterers (prices vary) or direct from Lynher Dairies.

10. Put a ring on it!
Hooray, now someone can give you a message of love without that minute on the lips ending directly on the hips. Sweets are for kids - the grown-ups (ahem) prefer quirky jewellery from www.shmoobamboo.com. The Love Heart Ring is our favourite but almost all their cute designs look good enough to eat. Want some romance? Maybe someone will give you their last rolo?
