Why we’re getting fatter

We spoke to the experts to find out what they see as the reasons behind the global obesity epidemic.

Recent studies suggest that by 2030, there will be 26 million people in the UK who are obese - a rise of 73% from the current 15 million. Over in the US, it's predicted that there will be 65 million more obese adults by 2030, if trends continue. However, the problem extends around the world - in Australia, one in four women are obese, while you'll probably be surprised to learn that a shocking seven out of 10 women in Tonga are obese.

We take a look at the reasons why we're getting fatter.

Lazy lifestyles
If an elderly relative or neighbour has ever regailed you with stories about how the youth of today have it so much easier, they might have a point - many experts believe our increasingly sedentary lifestyles play a large part in the rising obesity rates. "Lifestyles in general are becoming more and more sedentary," says Sara Dwyer, fitness instructor at the Scottish Boot Camp. "There are fewer people employed in physically demanding or manual jobs, and the situation is unlikely to change."

The processed problem
If last night's dinner consisted of a microwave meal, you're not alone.

"It's processed foods that cause most of the problems," says fitness consultant Kevin Witham. "For example, many people think breakfast cereals are healthy and yet they're often loaded with junk and are very processed, just like spreads. Additionally, low fat diets usually make people fatter as fats are replaced by sugar. Take processed fizzy drinks - there are recent studies showing that low-fat diet drinks make people more hungry so they eat more."

Digital dilemma
When was the last time you walked to the postbox, visited the post office or popped over to a friend's house just for a chat? With social networking and smart phones, we're able to carry out all these tasks without getting up from the sofa. "With the internet and other forms of communication such as social media and smart phones, more people are becoming dependent on this form of communication, which then leads the individuals away from an active lifestyle," points out Austan Torson, owner of the Utah Live-In Fitness Camp.

"They find themselves eating and snacking on unhealthy foods because of the convienence, and will consume more calories than they burn throughout the day.

Carb crisis
We all know that too many carbs can leave us feeling bloated, but the bad news is that today's foods contain more processed carbohydrates than ever before. "In my opinion the rise in obesity is simply because we're eating way too many highly processed carbohydrates that have a high GL (glycaemic load)," says Tina Michelucci, co-founder of dietfreedom.co.uk and author The GL Diet. "These, combined with saturated and trans fats are a deadly combination for our health. It's fine to eat lots of high GL foods if you're an athlete or training hard daily as you'll be using up all the glucose and energy these carbs provide, but if you have a high GL intake and are not burning these carbs off you'll gain weight."

Takeaway trouble
Kebabs, burgers and takeaway pizzas may all look more appealing when we're short on time, but the decline in popularity of the home cooked meal spells disaster for our waistlines, says Nathalie Jones, freelance dietician and founder of www.nathalie-jones.co.uk. "People eat outside of the home more often," says Nathalie. "There's a shift away from homecooked meals that can be made healthier (with less added fat and more vegetables, for example), towards grabbing a ready-made sandwich for lunch or a takeaway on the way home from work - both of which can contain two or three times as many calories as the home made versions."

Diet dilemmas
According to Robert Houtman, managing director of National Slimming and Cosmetic Clinics, while the majority of overweight people would love to shed a few pounds, the problem is that they simply don't know how to. "Lack of dietary information is a huge problem," says Robert. "Very few diets actually teach you what you should be eating. Instead they focus on the 'fast' weight loss. All these fad diets counting points or eating only protein or just cabbage soup have no educational value whatsoever. So, as soon as you stop the 'fad' diet you simply go back to your old eating habits."

Car culture
How do you get to work? If it's under 10 miles, cycling to the office would probably take less than an hour, and save you huge amounts of cash while the health benefits are endless. "People are less active in their daily lives," points out Nathalie Jones. "Although many people have a gym membership, this only really covers around three hours of exercise a week for most people who would consider themselves regular gym users. I see more and more people who hardly walk anywhere, drive to their work, sit at a desk and then drive home again. Therefore their calorie expenditure is markedly reduced."

Fast food
You only need to peer into a McDonald's and watch the hordes of teens chowing down on salt-laden fries and burgers to realise that too many people simply aren't aware of the effect such food can have. "There's a lack of education on the type of food to consume and the amount of those foods we should be eating on a daily basis," says Iain Reitze, managing director of the Prestige Boot Camp. "This education should start at a very young age so it can continue into the teens and eventually be passed on to their children also. For example, on average a male should consume around 2,500 calories a day to maintain weight but in the USA the average calorific consumption is currently 4,000 calories a day."

The evolution issue
Millions of years ago, organising an evening meal was a much more strenuous affair, while these days, microwaves, fast food outlets and takeaways mean preparing our food has never been easier - or required such little effort. "Our bodies are still hardwired for a different and far tougher world, one where survival required finding food, a world when there might be periods of famine, followed by feast," points out Angela Walker, founder of www.fabulousnutrition.co.uk. "In that type of environment, it's pretty helpful to have the type of hardwiring that favours storage during times of excess or feast that will help you survive through times of famine. In our current world, the food we are surrounded with doesn't necessarily meet the needs of the bodies we have."

Stress-related snacking
According to nutritionist Victoria Wills, founder of www.NuBeginnings.co.uk, increasing numbers of people are relying on food as a crutch, and it's this area that the government needs to focus on. "The focus of the media and government is on education," points out Victoria. "There may be 1% of the population remaining for whom it will come as news that a carrot is a better choice for your health than a chocolate bar. The issue is not one of education. The issue is a much more emotional one than that. So many people use food to change their mood, to change the way they feel and to help themselves to feel better. Therefore the focus needs to shift away from education about food to education about different tools to help people manage moods and stress levels without using food."

The portion problem
Whether it's super-sized soft drinks or extra-large burgers, there's no denying that we're cramming more onto our plate than ever before. "Globally, there's a proven rise in portion sizes," says Jeffrey Lawton, a San Francisco-based nutritionist and personal chef who's worked with several high-profile celebrities. "Whether at home, a local eatery, or a fast food spot the sizes keep getting bigger. On a recent trip to Mexico I observed an obese eight-or-so-year-old boy carrying two 3 litre bottles of Coca Cola to the register with his family. Aside from the toxic ingredients in these products, they are designed to keep you wanting more. The body needs balance and huge doses of sugar, fat, or salt keep us in a state where we are unable to truly identify food cravings. People want more bang for their buck but in turn they are actually getting more bang on their waistlines."

I'm an average person and this is just weightism, everyone is in different shapes and sizes.
If people want to be on the bigger side, then leave them be and vice versa.
There are people that prefer to be bigger than smaller and vice versa.

I don't want stats flying at us, just makes the nation depressing enough!

Moses - my surname has a "P" in it.  Does that mean I'm an agent of Satan?

I don't understand what the letter "P" has to do with Satan?  Where's the connection?

That said, I agree with your points.  Politicians and the big FMCG companies are working together for profit at the expense of health.

How on earth saturated fat got the blame for heart disease, cancer, etc, etc can only be down to people with a hidden agenda.  And the politicians and the companies producing cheap meals/snacks/foods based on wheat, corn, etc obviously needed us (the people) to believe it (sat fat) was bad for us so we'd buy more of their products sold at a massive margin.

3 culprits I tell you!
1) Poor, pathetic parents (I'm not talking money; I'm talking about knowledge and nurture)
2) profiteers: People who put profit before the community
3) Politicians: They will protect any business that makes money to sponsor their culture of lies and war-mongering
This unholy trinity conspire to poison pitiful punters with junk that even the physiologically  perfect body will not effectively process properly.
(How many "P"s are those again?) Think of all the titles that start with "P" and you know all the agents of SATAN. He has come to kill and to destroy MAN  that was wonderfully made in the image of God. Why do people smoke, drink cheap alcohol to excess  and eat junk food that make them fat? 3 culprits I tell you......!

The reason that people are getting fat is not complicated.

It's over complication. Diet here and diet there, it's ridiculous. Don't bother even checking how many calories are in your meal, that's just a load of rubbish, just eat a balanced meal consisting of some meat, some sort of greens and some potatoes or rice, until you are satisfied but not stuffed.

It's the supermarkets. Buy 3 get one free, 50% off etc. Just buy what you need and steer clear of money-grabbing snack foods like crisps and cakes.

Trust me, weight shouldn't be a concern in your life if you just follow those two simple rules!

ok... so we know our parents are old on diets of toffee pudding and custard and suet puddings, grandparents were healthy as the poor buggers couldnt afford to eat half the time, I know my mother used to go without food to feed my sister in the 50's..... Our issues are all of the comments really. Society today is: We work too hard to make ends meet; so, have no time or energy to get the exercise we need; or to make the meals we should; so don't play with our children enough outdoors; and view fast food as a treat at the end of the week as its cheap and is one of the few things that IS affordable. Guilty as charged.... if we want to combat the obesity issue we need to combat our cultural issues. Food is a source of constant battle for many of us, its a sin, its a necessity, it has enormous amounts of guilt attached to it, and yes if we eat too much of it we will be fat = fat is viewed as the new moral panic, with articles like this to fire us up even more to be fattist. As my mother always says (76 and not a skinny minnie) a little bit of what you fancy does you good. Wise words - work less, have more energy, have more time to make proper food which is cheaper and we will be able to have the proper puds and stop feeling guilty about it, and hopefully be a little healthier! Government take note.... stop raping us in taxes and putting everything up and the nation will end up healthier, more money = healthier people as they will be able to work less and get back to preparing their own food. Make veggies cheaper, dont tax 'fat' foods as all that will do it make it even harder for people to cope! oh, and stress contributes to weight gain as well. Nuf said.

To those who think people get fat because they eat too much (and/or move too little) what you say is true but it doesn't answer the question "why?".  Why do people eat too much?  Why do people move too little?

We need an answer to that "why".  And your answer does not give it - sorry.

Your answer is the same as saying that when a teenager goes through puberty they get taller because they ate more.  It's true they did eat more and they did get taller but they did not get taller because they ate more but rather their body's hormones were telling them to eat more because they were getting taller and they needed the extra energy.

It's the same with getting fatter.  The bodies hormones are telling them to eat more because they were getting fatter - not the other way round.  That is "why" people start to eat too much.  It's down to a hormonal breakdown / metabolic disruption.

READ MY LIPS: eat too much = get fat. Everything else is obfuscation and excuses.

 Scientific fact.

READ MY LIPS ITS DOWN TO GENES SCIENTIFIC FACT

One reason. There is only one reason why you're fatter than you should be.

You put more in than your body needs. That's it. There is no other reason. The 'reasons' posted here all leave out one important fact; none of them include the only actual reason. You eat more than your body needs you get put on weight. Every 'reason' posted here is not a reason, it is a contributing factor. You eat the same amount of calories (or in the case of a lot of people, too many calories full stop) and exercise less and you WILL put on weight.
As with many reports on MSN this one is pseudo science with no basis in reality. It is making excuses for the only reason; eating too much makes you fat and if you don't want to get fat you must exercise more or eat less. Simple. as. that.

for one my grandfather died at 96 and through his life had didnt have this sort of food around, so get used to eating more home food, and no processed, apparantly it takes a month to get used to a habbit. i cook from scratch, lay off the processed stuff. The government dont care about us, otherwise they would make less crap to eat...and sell cheaper healthy food.
Another instead of scof**** inbetween meals, have more sex, and i dont mean lying down, ive put 8 pounds on cuz iv been single for over 2 years lol...before i used to keep weight off doing it 5 times aweek...make an effort

The answers are so simple, why make things complicated. Use your own common sense. Unless you have a medical problem or some other type of disorder, generally for the masses if you eat too much and are not very active you will put on weight. Do we have to be told the obvious time and time again? do we have to be treated like babies for us to understand and care of our actions. Lets get back to reality, everything starts with putting knowledge into practice so we become wise.

Enjoy your food, eat healthy and do not deprive yourself of treats but balance everything out, and above all else work hard. This human body of ours is able to do a tremendous amount of work, it has been designed to be active and not a lazy heavy mass of wasted matter! Get on your bike cycle with you own body power, get down the gym, walk up a mountain, walk to the shop! leave the car alone and give the computer a break!

Lets get intelligent about our actions and we will truly wake up. We don't need to be baby say by any Government or authority because we are able to use our own mind!

To be honest the majority know that fast foods, takeaways, fizzy drinks etc are packed with processed junk, it's not a matter of lack of knowledge. People just choose these types of foods out of convenience, what knowledge the public lacks is the ease of cooking homemade meals, and how much cheaper it is in the long run!

It is true that we had to be much more active - and not that many years ago. My parents didn't have a washing machine, fridge, vacuum cleaner or any other gadget that we take for granted now. I had no washing machine until I'd been married 3 years and even then it was a second hand twin tub. We might have been thinner but we were absolutely shattered too. I blame the food we eat more for obesity. We weren't programmed to eat foods packed with chemicals. My grandparents lived into their 80's and never ate low fat anything or drunk skimmed milk ever. They just ate fresh, simple food. It really doesn't take 2 hours to cook a nutritious meal - veg cooks in around 10 minutes. Slow cookers can be left all day, pressure cookers are super quick. I think people - and it's mostly women because sad to say preparing meals is still considered women's work - are simply too tired holding down a full time job, being responsible for child care, house work and trying to have some sort of personal life . Sadly, chill cook becomes the obvious answer.
