Hollywood actress Penélope Cruz is the latest star to appear on a billboard as part of PETA's on-going anti-fur campaign.

The 37-year-old actress condemns the use of animal fur for clothing in a billboard ad that went up on Wednesday in New York's garment district near Penn Station.

The unveiling comes just ahead of New York Fashion Week, which begins on 9 Feb.

Similar campaigns will also be staged during Fashion Week in London and Milan.

The Oscar winner is shown with her head turned as she looks over her bare shoulder, next to the slogan "Give fur the cold shoulder".

We take a look at other female celebrities who have who have used their bodies and faces in some of Peta's most memorable campaigns.

Cows farting is changing the weather blah, blah, blah. If we made cows extinct and had a lot of grain fields no one would be hungry, blah, blah, blah. Wake us all up when you've left the sixth form.

@Roger Haines:

Obviously you have difficulty understanding any concepts I put forward; It is not propaganda, it is the truth, clear as day. Yours is the voice of ignorance, clearly you have not studied any form of biology or chemistry and you don't understand the impact our society has on the world. Therefore I'd suggest you keep you insults to a minimum, read up on this, maybe go out into the world and experience the effects first hand.

Nothing I have said is false and is scientifically sound. Now come back with a reasoned argument rather than insulting my intelligence.

Samuel Biddle Your posts are nothing but pseudo scientific nonsense. Keep absorbing the propaganda. You might know what sustainability means but in my opinion you are as thick as a bit of 2 x 4.

@ James O'neill;

It's a choice based on facts, not opinion; I'm not a vegetarian because I want to be morally superior, I'm a vegetarian because it is currently unsustainable to continue eating what we do. Sustainability is the key to the future and whether you like it or not the world will have to drastically decrease meat consumption, especially if the population increases to the projected 9 billion by 2050. I want to make a point that there is nothing wrong with consuming meat, BUT the amount of meat that is being consumed and the way it is procured is detestable.

Also, you may want to learn a bit about nutrition before claiming vegetarians do not intake correct nutrients. I am a very active person, I do a lot of weight lifting and my diet supplies everything I need.
Lastly, vegetarianism has been around longer than ten years.

Now I'm done with your ignorance.

self opinionated arrogant vegetarians always have this attitude like they have a superior intellect because they stopped eating meat, whoopee, as though this gives them the right to make judgements over everyone else's eating habits, that's happened since the beginning, they think they can alter a natural way of life, remember you vegetarians are not normal that's a fact,

like it or not its a reality you are a minority, a phenomenon that's only been happening for 10 years or more, but not very long for sure, maybe not eating meat has changed your mental capacity to think in a rational way, your not getting the correct balanced nutritional food, i,e meat,

have a sunday roast tomorrow, you won't regret it,

now i'm done with this stupid subject,

I am a vegetarian(since age of 11 or so, im 30 now) and it wasn't to do with not wanting to eat meat or whatever but I think I'd have turned anyway as I am a huge animal lover and don't like cruelty to animals even if it's just a shove, I don't use fur or leather out of choice, I don't oppose anyone else their choices unless they start being insulting and i get upset and stand firmly by my views. The things I don't like are people 'trying' to veggie and not liking it and then slating it, and I REALLY dislike fellow veggies/vegans making us sound like a bunch of weirdos cause I for one certainly am not, it makes me cringe. I know just aswell as anyone that we've been wearing fur and eating meat for centuries and yes nowadays there's more cruelty involved and it's almost needless but if anyone is going to preach, look at both sides of the argument, if you  don't want to wear fur etc then don't but I don't think there's anything can be done about it to be honest even though my blood boils at the thought of what happens. And those who do eat meat and wear fur need to stop winding up non-fur users/meaters.

Good on you, Miss Cruz, the fur industry should have been made illegal decades ago, it is mired in cruelty and is a ghastly indictment of the way humans ill-treat animals.

@Jay:
Nice balanced argument, BUT; everything you have expressed fails to take into account the huge consequence of consuming meat and wearing fur and the way these industries are all connected not only with themselves, but with our struggle against climate change.

The simple fact is there are plenty of reasons not to consume meat products; we have viable alternatives that did not exist thousands of years ago - your argument that because it is what we have done, it is what we can continue to do is redundant in this point. Likewise, there are plenty of fur alternatives to 'keep warm'

Why would we discontinue our age old traditional of killing and consuming animals?

1. Animal Welfare: anyone who has been to an abattoir and seen the way livestock are slaughtered will know it is not nearly as 'humane' as is commonly thought. additionally, the way the livestock are bred and raised is questionable, and all the while the farms are touting their welfare, often supported by the RSPCA and other welfare organisations. I have seen farms that hide away certain dubious areas from inspection.The wool is pulled over the eyes of the consumer as the products are endorsed by those who are ignorant to the real living conditions of the animals.

2. Even without the considerable welfare issues that surround the meat industry, a larger problem exists that obviously wasn't a concern to our ancestors: The emission of Greenhouse gases. Given that livestock produce more greenhouse gases that cars do, they are becoming a very great threat to the ice caps and thus, the worlds climate.

3. Water. Production of livestock costs a great deal more water and land; resources that could be far more efficiently utilized should we eliminate the climb of trophic levels needed to produce meat. The shortage of water can and will manifest itself in the future when climate change inevitably takes hold. You can already see the effects of this.

Mycoprotein provides a viable alternative to meat, one which is energy efficient and requires far less land and water.

Yes, it is the corporations at the top, pulling the strings, however, the consumer has a more powerful role to play and we need to stop buying into such a destructive and selfish industry.

And, in defence of all of my fellow vegetarians,vegans, conservationists etc, we are NOT preaching or finger pointing. We are fighting for our planet and sitting on the fence will not be sufficient to protect the future.

The point that we will do as our ancestors did goes against the laws of nature: we have to evolve and adapt to the problems we now face.

Live long and prosper!

hey Laura Lamb, Think on sweet pea humanely  and kill just can't work in the same sentance. You take it's life for goodness sake how can that be humane???? You either get to grips with it you kill you eat you use everythiing. I do hate the kill for skin brigade use it all or let it live. I'm a hunter eater user... Never had the oppertunity to hunt big game  but pest control and the use of meat byproducts is not wrong

Love this woman but her views are jaded, Whats wrong with people  many of us eat meat, Why waste the skins leather is cow or pig skin. hypocrites we are. I do agree the sluaghter of endangered species is wrong but waste is also wrong be it recycleable produce or animal skins.

Very good view George. The cruelty must end yes, but the trade cannot end and most likely wont.

It is not the fur trade that should stop, it is the cruelty involved that has to stop. It is a pity these models and actresses dont' donate some of their money to stopping the cruelty. Human-beings will always wear fur. Fur is not glamourous but necessary for surviving the winter in some parts of the world. Stop the cruelty. There will always be a fur trade.

Thank you james :)

I am aware that many times the animals are not eaten in the fur trade, but you cant let selfish corporations sway your view on the human races use of fur and animals.

I don't agree how many companies deal with the fur trade, I do think its wrong and I would like to serve up some of them and skin them alive too, but you can't preach that using fur is wrong or eating meat is wrong when humans have done it for 1,000's of years and our bodies are designed to consume meat.

Unfortunate its the preaching vegans that slate everybody who eat meat that give themselves a bad name. Nobody minds you not eating meat and not wearing fur, that's your choice. But don't preach to us and make us look bad when we are the ones who are doing what humanity has done for years.

Vegans don't preach about the butchery of humans and there body parts being slung all over the floor, other humans eating there own kind. Nasty I know but these things happen.

To balance the tables for both parties:

1) Leave rare and endangered species alone for a good 300 years to boost population.

2) Only kill animals that a vast in numbers and use there meat for consumption and there fur/ hides for clothes etc.

3) Kill the animal in a merciful way as to minimise suffering.

4) Respect the views of both parties to reach a neutral ground, stop preaching and learn to adapt to societies ever changing cultures and use of the resources of the planet.

We do need to slow down as a species and we are very cocky, but its examples about plain finger pointing and "Your evil for doing this", that makes the whole topic sore and aggressive.

If you choose to not eat meat, fair enough, that's your choice. But don't get all in our faces because we do, that's out choice. If I choose to wear fur, its not because I enjoy the animal suffering, its because I want to keep warm. simple.

The only last thing I'll say that its a pity we don't use the animal like we did years ago, I doubt there would be any argument, don't blame us, blame the greedy corp. owners.

This is cruel, but I would never become a non meat eater, we are programmed to eat meat that is what helped us become the species we are! The fact that this was done in the early nighties by the super models then - not wearing fur! then a few years later a massive scandal of the very same models doing a cat walk show of.. oh let me guess fur products!! Its all a crock, I agree with use everything of the animal, also the fact that the trade is mostly in china, are you all really surprised how they treat animals, they in normal circumstances use everything of the animals, but when there is a demand for a certain product on a commercial scale of course the use of the full animal is not going to happen, I am afraid its all the people with monies fault they are the ones that demand this,  your regular joe bloggs like me could not afford anything like that....Peta aim the adverts at the rich their the ones that cause this trade and stop preaching about being a vegan...if i wanted no energy I would just stop eating!!!!!

Nobody ate the body of the animals used in the fur trade stupid

These self righteous vegetarians make me want to eat more meat. I have never met a vegetarian yet that I haven't considered insane. If I kill a rabbit and eat the body, what's wrong with making some gloves from the skin? You could make a massive coat just from the amount of road kill on the roads near me. Since the fox hunting ban there are foxes all over the roads. My diet is better than yours is a rather boring conversation and constantly trying to prove moral superiority is the mark of a bully fascist type. If you want to have a Hitler style diet, don't bore us all with the details.
