Iconic Wizard of Oz dress up for auction
Everett Collection, Rex Features
Julien's Auctions, Rex Features
Judy Garland made the dress famous when she wore it for the part of Dorothy Gale in family favourite 1939 film The Wizard of Oz – and now it’s expected to sell for a mammoth figure at auction in California next month.
The dress was designed by Hollywood costume designer Adrian, and was made from gingham using a sewing machine to ensure that it looked authentic. It will be teamed with a white blouse and is the only complete version of the costume known to exist that is actually seen in the film.
So, if you have a few thousand pounds to spare and fancy the dress for Halloween next year, head to Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills for the Icons and Idols 2012: Hollywood auction on November 9. But if that’s too far for you to travel, and a little too much money to shell out – you can view the dress at Stafford Hotel in London from behind the glass until November 5.
Also on auction is the dress worn by Julie Andrews as Maria in The Sound of Music, Pierce Brosnan's James Bond suit from Goldeneye, and the outfit worn by Angelina Jolie in Girl Interrupted.
