The key to preppy style
The Preppy Handbook gets a re-write for autumn with bold checks, vintage lines and heritage styling. Here's how to make the look work for you...
The preppy look is one of the easiest trends to re-create, whether you choose prim blouses and pencil skirts, polo shirts and cargo pants or masculine tailoring in tweeds and brogues.
'Take inspiration from classic American brands like Ralph Lauren and Banana Republic, as well as relatively newer kids on the block Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister - and don't forget the quintessentially British brands, such as Burberry, Aquascutum, Fred Perry and Church's shoes,' advises personal stylist Angela Barnard of My London Stylist.
'This autumn, look for boyish shirts buttoned to the neck, tailored shorts, cropped trousers and a brogue or loafer. Try men's clothing in small sizes to create authenticity - Topman and Uniqlo has a huge choice as do American Apparel. Add your own twist with bright coloured brogues, a masculine watch or a vintage leather belt.
'Preppy doesn't need to be 'boyish' though - for a sexier, more feminine take on the look wear a fitted sweater with a figure-hugging pencil skirt,' adds Angela.
