At some time or another, we’ve all wished for ways to change our appearance. Longer legs for example, a smaller waist, fuller lips, thicker lashes, but I bet one thing that wasn’t on your wish list is a teeny tiny head.

Over in Japan, where a love of all things small is practically part of the culture (from the bonsai tree to miniscule mobile phones), fashion conscious women are taking to wearing cosmetic belts to help shrink their heads.

To achieve the desired effect, a special belt is secured around the head before bedtime and works its magic while you sleep, slimming your cheeks and ironing out that double chin – all for just 855 yen (around £5).

The makers of the “Small Face Make Belt” (aka Kogao Meiku Beruto) claim that over time it will actually help your head shrink in size.  (A look only previously achieved by unfortunate victims of Voodoo witch doctors).

I know just what my boyfriend’s reaction would be if I chose to don such a contraption at bedtime, needless to say it would involve a lot of pointing and laughing.

But far from crying tears of mirth, Japanese men are jumping on the bandwagon and buying their own gadgets to make their mouths smaller.

A Tex Mex Slim Mouth looks like an extendable gum shield and is said to train mouth muscles if used for three minutes a day. One of these will set you back about £4 - but let's just hope this trend for all things small doesn't go too far...

Still, I suppose it makes sense when we spend so much time toning our bodies at the gym, we should ‘tone’ our faces too. But I wonder what’s next. Ear Dumbells?  Eyelid weights?
