Instant beauty: grunge eyes
This season sees a sultry, grunge-inspired take on that catwalk staple: the smoky eye. Think smudged greys, browns or burgundy and messy hair for that just-got-out-of-bed look that's still super-sexy...
'One of Autumn/Winter's hottest trends looks back to the laid-back Nineties - with the focus on intense eyes, teamed with flawless skin and nude lips,' says make-up artist Rae Mathieson from Beauty UK. 'Smoky shadows and thick eye liners are worn smudged for a slightly dishevelled, grunge feel. The result is very downtown New York chic with a rock chick edge.'
Your celebrity muses? Look to early-Nineties Courtney Love and Kate Moss for beauty - if not necessarily lifestyle - inspiration.
It's a look that's popped up in various forms at Alexander Wang, Chloe and Michael Kors to name but three - and it's pretty easy to achieve. And no, leaving your make-up on overnight then leaving home without combing your hair isn't the best option!
A few tips? Try blending cream shadows and powders around the entire eye for a sultry evening look. Apply with your fingertips and make sure you rub it in as much as possible to stop the colour from creasing into the lines around your eyes. Chanel Illusion D'Ombre in Illusoire (£22.50, from Boots and department stores nationwide) has a great gel-like finish that's easy to blend.
Alternatively, try getting the look with Beauty UK's fabulous - and very affordable - Metallic Eye Sparks (£2.49 each). 'They're gorgeous and creamy in texture with an intense metallic finish, and blend easily to create that "out all night" look,' says Rae. Choose from four gorgeous smoky shades: grey, blue, purple or gold.
'If you want to intensify the effect even further, try lining the inner waterline and upper lash line in black,' Rae suggests.
And the rest of the look? 'Lip colour should be barely-there nude, and skin kept as flawless and natural-looking as possible,' says Rae. Hair is fashionably unkempt - but if you need a little help with looking undone, try using Umberto Giannini Glam Hair Grunge Glamour Tousled Salt Spray (£5.61, from Boots and chemists nationwide). Yes, you can buy styling products to help you look like you haven't been styled!
