Instant beauty tips: ballerina buns
Want a fuss-free, go-anywhere hairdo that never goes out of style? Look no further than the ballerina bun. It's a look that's been popping up all over the place recently - with many of Hollywood's most fashion-conscious celebrities sporting the 'do on the red carpet...
The oh-so-elegant ballerina bun has long been a favourite choice for super-chic celebrities - but it's enjoyed something of a resurgence over recent months, thanks in part to Natalie Portman's trendsetting role in Black Swan. Needless to say, the Oscar-winning actress has been one of many stars who've sported the 'do on the red carpet this year. Other fashion-forward fans who've indulged in the trend include Gossip Girl's Blake Lively and Fantastic Four star Jessica Alba.
The great thing about the ballerina bun is that it always looks chic and goes with just about any look - whether you're dressed up for a party, dressed smartly for work or dressed down for the weekend. And it couldn't be easier to get the look, as top hairstylist Severin Hubert explains.
'The ballerina bun is one of the simplest and easiest up-dos to achieve,' he says. 'Long hair is best for this style, and it needs to be sleek and neat. First, slightly dampen your hair. Then brush hair up into a firm ponytail at the crown and secure with an elastic band. Twist the ponytail, and wrap hair around its base. Tuck the ends under and secure with grips. Finish with hairspray to hold everything in place.'
A traditional ballerina bun sits perched right on the top of the head - but there are variations on the look. You can wear it lower down at the back of the head, or at the side - as showcased by the always-stunning Taylor Swift at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala (pictured).
Johnny Loves Rosie
The ballerina bun is a great look for brides, too. And if you want to dress it up even more, add one or two accessories. We love the crystal shooting stars bobby pins, £12, from Johnny Loves Rosie. Or to channel Natalie Portman's Black Swan look for a big night out, add a gorgeous vintage feathered flower clip, £12, also from Johnny Loves Rosie.
